Medical causes of bed wetting are rare, but potentially serious

While most kids don’t have an organic condition that underlies the sleepwetting, it’s important to exclude the possibility of diabetes, infection etc. Tests might indicate a "small bladder" or "nervous bladder", but these conditions are no reason to delay treatment; these kids also respond very well to the Try for Dry method. The simplest way to determine if your child has a medical problem underlying the bed wetting is simply to ask yourself...

Does he/she wet during the day? If not, then it's very likely just a matter of not waking to the bladder signal. But before you try any treatment ask yourself:

    Does your child.....

    1. sleep wet now, after being dry for 6 months. or longer?  ____
    2. ever had significant ear infections?_____
    3. ever have or had bladder or kidney infections?_____
    4. get pain or burning when urinating?_____
    5. have daytime wetting incidents, even damp underwear?_____
    6. urinate more than 6 times daily?_____
    7. hold back urination for long periods (8 hr +)?_____
    8. dribble, have to push hard, or have a weak stream?_____
    9. wake up more than once a night to go to the bathroom?____
    10. get thirsty at night?_____
    11. have a recent weight loss?_____
    12. have a problem with bowel movements such as diarrhea, holding, constipation, or soiling of underwear?_____
    13. have a recent history of stress, mood swings, or emotional trauma?_____
    14. exhibit sleepwalking, night terrors, nightmares every week?____

If your answer was “YES” to any of the above, the problem is “complicated” enuresis and

it indicates that you might need a doctor's advice.
